THE MASTERSTROKE of Mr. GEORGE STRIBLING
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Phil. Jockeys Academy .......... Year 1995
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Not in any stretch of the imagination did the average Filipino racing fan
realize we would have such a devoted and talented teacher in the person of
George.....neither in any further stretching of the imagination did we think
we would have in the midst a bunch of riders who would sacrifice and
persevere with sheer hard-work, patience, perspiration and determination
to become what they are now - highly gifted jockeys whose only wish
in life was to give their best in the attainment of their dreams and for the
betterment, above anything else, of our beloved racing industry..
Mr. Stribling was more than a teacher. He was a consultant,
a guidance counselor, a critique, a confidante, and a father to his
students. And the seed he planted did bear fruit. He produced
what may be called today as the Magnificent Five- his 5 outstanding
students who changed the image of the Filipino jockey for life.

PERCEIVED and regarded by many as the EQUAL of
Patricio Dilema, if not better, Miguel Sorima Recosana
will long be remembered as that track wizard who
catapulted the caliber of the Filipino jockey
to world-class status.

Jockey Miguel Sorima Recosana
Written by Freddie Mañalac
Saturday, 08 November 2008 15:57
WORKING STUDENT si Jockey Miguel "Badjao" Recosana bago naging isang
hinete.
malalaking pakarera tulad ng Speaker Ramon Mitra Cup, First Gentleman
Silver Cup.
bilang isang bisita.
Franklin Drilon Senate President Cup.
Mr. Tony "Boy" Eleazar at
kanyang gabayan at tulungan.

SANTA ANA PARK
From an initial 11 OTBs in 1994, PRCI steadily built up its network to 335 by the end of 2007. OTBs today account for 90 percent of gross handle. While most of the OTBs are in Metro Manila, traditionally the area of the greatest concentration of racing patrons, new markets are opening in Northern Luzon and in the Visayas.
This development may be said to be closely linked to, or is a logical consequence of the technological applications in the broadcast of horse races and the transmission of betting data. Most OTBs have also installed their satellite reception equipment, while local cable TV stations throughout the country carry the race broadcast. There is, therefore, an expanding reach of horse racing which is creating new markets for the gaming side, as well as new enthusiasts for the sport.
PRCI hopes to raise its racing operation to new heights with the projected transfer of Santa Ana Park races by
the third quarter of 2009 to a new racecourse within the Saddle & Clubs Leisure Park in Trece Martires, Cavite.
The sprawling 70-hectare racing facility, which is more than three times the size of the 21.8-hectare Makati racetrack, includes two racetracks of 1600 m and1400 m; a stable facility with an initial 78 building clusters capable of housing over 1,000 horses; and, a four-story grandstand. The development of the new racetrack adheres to international standards for racecourse operation.

-----------------------------------------------------
The second "Big Red" of the century to wear the mark of greatness (Man o' War also carried that nickname), the powerfully built chestnut colt was only the second 2-year-old to be voted Horse of the Year after winning seven of nine starts in 1972. The Claiborne Farm color-bearer finished third in the Wood Memorial in the third race of his 3-year-old campaign, leading to speculation that he might have a chink in his armor after all. But the colt rebounded for trainer Lucien Laurin and jockey Ron Turcotte in the Kentucky Derby with a scintillating 2 1/2-length victory over Sham in 1:59 2/5, which was the only sub 2-minute Derby in history until Monarchos stopped the clock in 1:59.97 in 2001.
After beating Sham by the same margin in the Preakness, Secretariat turned in what many consider the most awesome performance ever by a thoroughbred, beating the nearest of four rivals in the Belmont Stakes by 31 lengths. Announcer Chic Anderson's call of the stretch run remains one of racing's best: "Secretariat is blazing along! The first three-quarters of a mile in 1:09 4/5. Secretariat is widening now. He is moving like a tremendous machine!" Having been syndicated for a record $6.08 million, the horse considered by many to be the greatest of the century was retired at the end of his 3-year-old season, with a lifetime record of 16 wins in 21 starts and earnings of $1,316,808.
P.R. DILEMA

Regardless of what detractors say,
this rider will let his past, present,
and future performances prove
beyond reasonable doubt of the
talent and class that he is in.
Jockey Skelton of New Zealand
Written by AUSTRALIAN SPORTSWRITER Charles McNeil :
Robert J. "Bob" Skelton (born c. 1934) was a top jockey in New Zealand and Australian Thoroughbred horse racing who competed from the 1950s through the 1980s. Among his many major race wins, Skelton rode Great Sensation to three victories in the Wellington Cup and won the Auckland Cup on Rose Mellay in 1974 and again in 1977 on Royal Cadenza. In 1976, he rode Van der Hum to victory in Australia's most prestigious race, the Melbourne Cup and ten years later rode Rising Fear into second place in the 1986 Cup.
Skelton retired in the 1987-88 season. He was inducted in the New Zealand Racing Hall of Fame in 2006 and in 2007 the Auckland Racing Club voted him as their 8th official "Legend of Ellerslie" where he won nine jockey premierships at Ellerslie Racecourse between 1955 and 1976.

Written by R.P. Sports Columnist OBIE LIM :
In 1974, he stepped on Philippine territory, participated for
two weeks in a race meet held at MJC and PRC.
Bannered as the Asian Racing Conference, it was a rare
confrontation of Asia's best jockeys and this
included of course our local idols =
Jesus, Pete, Laylo, Pablito, Crisencio, Cartasano,
Macaraig, Boying, Henson, ToRno, Wilfredo, etc.
The superstar of Macau was there too - jockey DSK Wong.
He was the highest pointer with three wins.....awesome showing .
The two jockeys from Japan had no win to boot.
The Korean and Singaporean riders also had no victory .
Bong Guce registered one win atop NIC STAR, making the
Filipino crowd jubilant hysterical and jumping with joy.
It should have been two wins for the local boys but
Jockey Laylo lost in a photo finish atop BIRTHDAY GIFT....its okey.
The COUP DE GRACE of the Racing Meet :
Skelton piloted a Calalang horse - CANONAZO to victory
in a dazzling display of slick oval maneuvers using
the inner rail at the FAR TURN slipping past four horses
making the crowd think they were seeing Bill Shoemaker perform
before their very eyes, but learning later on that it was Bob
the real New Zealand version and equal of the "Shoe".

Jockey's PROFILE
TITLE : BIG OVERSIGHT
Written by : Tony Trinidad
Date : Sept. 14, 1996
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Do you know that Filipino jockeys are known worldwide ?
Our legendary rider of yesteryears Inocencio Alba was sadly
forgotten from the list of retired jockeys who were honored by
the NPJA some years back. The short list included
Jose Fernandez, Jose Saulog, Leonardo Trinidad,
Juanito Macaraig, to name a few. I reminded them about
this big error on one of my columns back in 1990 to the
chagrin of oldtime racing fans who wanted the error rectified.
But Alba was vindicated by the Guinness Book which listed
him in its September 1976 edition.
It reported :
"Filipino jockey Inocencio Alba is the only Living Legend (then)
who is the record holder in the whole world with a record of
16 mounts in one race day where he won 9 races,
four seconds, three thirds, and unplaced none.
Making a clean sweep of all his races for the day !!!
Guinness also listed the race feat of Alba in one of
San Lazaro's Invitational Races where RACING HEART
beat THE CHIEF ridden by Elias by a nose. The race
was witnessed by thousands of racing afficionados who
were simply aghast when they later found out that Alba
was already 47 yrs old and Elias only 25."
