Shaolin Monks

The earliest introduction overseas can be traced back
to the Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368). It was Daichi, a Japanses monk, who came to learn Chan during the reign of Emperor Taiding of the Yuan Dynasty and he took Shaolin kung fu back to Japan. During Emperor Wanli's reign of the Ming Dynasty, Chen Yuanyun, a secular disciple of Shaolin Temple, went to Japan to teach Shaolin boxing. In the 1930s, Doshin So, a Japanese monk, came to learn the fighting arts at the Shaolin Temple, and founded the Shorinji Kempo Federation, the first of its kind in Japan, specializing in Shaolin kung fu. Today, the federation has more than 1.4 million trainees.

Shaolin kung fu has spread more quickly at a wider range around the world in recent year since China's implementation of the economic reform and opening-up policies. Organizations concerning the dissemination of Shaolin kung fu can be found in dozens of countries, including France, Italy, the United States, Australia, Singapore, Switzerland, and Poland. In recent years, the Shaolin Temple has attracted trainers from more than 80 counties and regions. Moreover, the Shaolin Temple has dispatched delegations consisting of eminent monks and master kung fu practitioners to dozens of countries and regions, including Japan, Singapore, France, Thailand, Belgium, and Italy. Shaolin kung fu has thus become cultural heritage shared by the entire world.

Students age between 18-60, with or without martial arts experience are all welcomed. While we encourage the teachings of Kung Fu to strengthen and revitalize ones body, we also encourage the calming and contemplating of one's mind by seeking stillness within movement.

Master Shi Guo Song

One of the Ten Famous Arhats (Top Temple Guards) in Shaolin Temple to hold the post of the Chief Coach of the Shaolin martial arts monk group, Guo Song began learning martial arts at the age of six and was accepted into the Shaolin Temple at the age of thirteen.

Master Shi Yan lu

As the general drillmaster of Shaolin's warrior monks,
He participated in digging up and sorting up Kung fu Secret Book of China's Shaolin Temple, Shaolin Kung fu Collected Works and was invited to perform and teach Shaolin Kung fu in several decades of countries or areas.

School Masters

Master Shi Xing wang Master Xingwang began his Kung fu training under Boxing Master Liu guangde since a little child. In 1983, he became a monk of the Shaolin Temple and was apprenticed to the old monk Dejing who later gave him the Buddhist name Xingwang. He completed his martial arts training with Master Suyun and Master Suxi, and then began his teaching life of Shaolin Kung fu. In 2003, he won first prize in Shaolin Traditional Boxing and Long Weapons in the Shaolin Traditional Boxing Competition middle-aged group matches held in Henan province. The kung fu styles that he is good at include Dahong Boxing, Xiaohong Boxing, Luohan Boxing, Back-through Boxing, Damo Sword, Tai chi, Eight-Diagram Palm, Chopping Boxing, Fanzi Boxing, Qimei Gun, Yijinjing, Baduanjin and etc.

Master Fu San bin

Master Sanbin firstly trained Shaolin Kung fu as a child under the guidance of his father, who was a warrior monk of the Shaolin Temple and later resumed his secular life. Later he continued his martial arts training with Master Suxi and Master Xingshu and has been teaching martial arts since the 1990s. The kung fu styles that Master Sanbin is good at include Dahong Boxing, Xiaohong Boxing, Luohan Boxing, Back-through Boxing, Thirteen Spears, Chunqiu Broadsword, Taizu Chang Quan, Changhu Xinyimen and etc.
Master Shi Chang yuan

He studied at Shaolin Temple Martial Arts School in 1995, then performed alongside Master Shi GuoSong and learned real Shaolin Boxing. He served as the leader of Shaolin Temple international performance team between 1998 and 2004.

He has performed at Bangkok, Australia, Russia, Houston, and invited to perform in Japan by China National Tourism Administration at Sino-Japan 30th Diplomatic Relations Establishment Anniversary. He has been teaching at school since 2004, and awarded national and provincial excellent coach for many times. In 2006, he took part in the World Buddha's Sarira Exhibition at Singapore, Malaysia.

Where the Story Began

Shaolin Kung fu is a precious heritage in Chinese culture. It is encyclopedical and phantasmagoric. In common parlance, all the Kung fu around world comes from Shaolin. During the thousands of years Shaolin Kung fu gets countless love from many expert Buddhist monks, heroes and ordinary people.

Shaolin Kung fu gets its name from its cradleland—Shaolin Temple on Song Mountain. Its naissance is based on the distillate of traditional Chinese Wushu. In Chinese history, at the end of Sui Dynasty and the beginning of T'ang, General Li Shiming vanquished his enemy General Wang Renze with the help of thirteen Buddhist monks. These Buddhist monks got a large reward after the war and Shaolin Temple also became famous and got a laudatory title—"the Number One Temple around the world". Shaolin Kung fu is one of the most widespread and wide-influencing genres in Chinese Kung fu. It has its own unique style and peculiarity. Shaolin Kung fu is flexible and powerful, plain and simple, accurate and various. It has quiet internal and mighty external. Every action either attacks or defends and changes in an unpredictable way. Shaolin Kung fu performance is elegant and bellicose and its flying is like a dragon, moving is like the lightning and sound is like the thunder.

Shaolin Kung fu includes hundreds of skills such as long-weapon-Kung fu, short –weapon-Kung fu, soft-weapon-Kung fu, hidden-weapon-Kung fu, fist, stick-Kung fu, falchion-Kung fu, sp ear-Kung fu, sword-Kung fu, Qigong and etc.

Centuries-old Chinese civilization gestated millions culture masterpieces and the splendid Shaolin Kung fu is the crystallization of human intelligence. In the field of Chinese Kung fu, Shaolin Kung fu is a flaring pearl and shining all the time. Up to now, Shaolin Kung fu has submitted an application to the UNESCO for the title of "Magnum Opus of World Nonmaterial Culture Legacy". This is a god-given opportunity and it significant to establish and save the status and the orthodox origin of Shaolin Kung fu.

the Best of Shaolin Kung Fu

The international work of Shaolin kung fu is derived from the exercise of cross-legged sitting in meditation of the Chan Sect, the foundation of the utmost mastery in all styles of kung fu. It requires the practitioner to close his eyes, place the tougue to the upper jaw, and breathe evenly to release the qi go throughout the internal organs. The development of the Chan exercises gave birth to the 12^th style of Yijinjing, which tempers toughness with gentleness. More unique skills were born after the Ming Dynasty, including the internal and external exercises, hard exercise, light exercise, child's exercise, walking and fighting on top of stakes set into the ground, the Luohan exercise, freezing an enemy by jabbing his acu-points, fire exercise, and the heart-and-mind stake exercise, to name only a few.

The unique skills of the Shaolin Kung fu give full play to a human being's potential by integrating the wisdom and spirit of the Chan Sect. Imagine these: he is still alive even though he is strangled; his throat remains unhurt after being stung by a spear; his fingers penetrate wood; the stone is broken on top of his head; the stick is broken after heating his chest; he headstands on two fingers; and he breaks the stone with his "flying" foot

Shaolin breath control can be divided into the internal and external, or the soft and hard exercise. Internal breath control exercise is practiced either as a means to keep fit and cultivate moral conduct by regulating the internal qi(breath). They include baduanjin, yijinjing, yinyang qi and sitting Chan. The external breath control stresses directing the internal qi, through concentration, to a certain part of the body, thus endowing it with extraordinary strength, so powerful and incredible that it is beyond people's imagination. The best examples are tiebushan(iron jacker), zhushazhang(red sand palm), tietougong(iron head exercise, or hanging from a tree with a rope round the neck), gangdugong(iron stomach exercise), fire exercise, and tieshazhang (iron sand palm).

Shaolin kung fu on stakes can be divided into the Meihua (Plum Blossom) and Xinyi (Heart-and-Mind). The Meihua stakes stand some two meters above the ground and each is set at a specific distance from the others. Shaolin devotees are able to fight on top of the stakes as if they were moving on solid ground. The Xinyi stake exercise is one of the oldest exercises of Shaolin kung fu. An internal work, it sends out the power through integrating the internal breath and strength. Skillful devotees can stamp their feet into a pit and break the stone with their feet. The 48 pits in the Ten-Thousand-Buddha Hall of the Shaolin Temple evidence this power.

Mastery Derives from Hard Training

As a matter of fact, the majestic Shaolin kung fu only can be mastered through extreme, almost unimaginably difficult training. What is the secret? The answer lies in years of perseverance. The devotees persist in training year-round, even during the hottest of summer and the coldest days of winter. They awake before dawn and finish training when the moon hangs high. They race up and climb down stairs a thousand meters high, naked to the waist in winter, and practice on stakes, and in robes in the summer they lift the "stone lock" each weighing as much as 50 kilos. They hang themselves upside down with perfect composure. They turn their heads into "iron" by hitting against wood. Light exercise can be trained on the edge of a cauldron or a bamboo basket;and beating water in a vat or a pool is part of the basic training for the iron sand palm exercise. They do not stop training even while eating, walking, sleeping, and offering tea to guests. They rise early in the morning, do the iron broom exercise while sweeping the ground. They practice the skill of iron fan while fanning in hot summer. They use their stomach as a chopping board when cooking, and they crush walnuts on their head.

In the depth of Mt. Songshan there are secret training grounds equipped with wooden stakes, sand bags, and sand pits – the cradle of many masters of Shaolin kung fu. These are located by brooks surrounded by beautiful scenery, thus favoring the tough training.

Chan and Meditation

Bodhidharma preached a new school of Buddhism - the Chan Sect - by combining the essence of traditional Chinese Philosophy. The Chan Sect advocates self-cultivation through seated meditation. The daily routine for monks in the temple consisted of "sitting cross-legged in front of the wall" in perfect composure, in order to stifle all distracting thoughts, as preached by Bodhidharma. There were no written instructions to follow; and for a Chan Sect devotee, "instant awakening" is of primary importance. The Chan Sect thus transformed the abstruse, over-elaborate Indian Buddhism that was adapted to the traditional Chinese psychology. This partially explains why it remained popular for centuries while other sects experienced rise and fall. This Chan Sect reached its zenith during the Tang Dynasty (618-907), when the majority of monastery inhabitants were Chan devotees. Thus was laid a solid foundation for its introduction to the rest of the world.

A traditional Chinese philosophy holds, tranquility contains movements. Silent self-cultivation in an age of turmoil requires moveable supplements or supports so that the cultivator could reach the destiny of "true tranquility." The Chan Sect held that this inner state could never be fully developed without the practice of martial arts. Survival is the main motivator for mankind, with no exception for the Chan devotees. Master Bodhidharma did not leave the cave until the moment the realized the truth of "maintaining emotional tranquility with movements and controlling movements with emotional tranquility. Tranquility and movements benefit and complement each other."

The first "modern" computer
(i.e., general-purpose and program-controlled) was built in 1941
by Konrad Zuse. Since there was a war going on,
he applied to the German government for funding to build his
machines for military use, but was turned down because
the Germans did not expect the war to last beyond Christmas.

The computer was launched in 1943,
more than 100 years after Charles Babbage designed the first
programmable device. Babbage dropped his idea after he
couldn't raise capital for it.
In 1998, the Science Museum in London, UK, built a working replica
of the Babbage machine, using the materials and work methods
available at Babbage's time.
It worked just as Babbage had intended.
